Extra Credit Option

Dear all,

For those of you who would like to earn extra credit:

  • At the end of your paper, add your recommendations on what the State could or should change to better meet the standards set out in the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGP)  for the specific case you discuss in your final paper.

Be sure that your recommendation(s) relate directly to the case you chose for your final paper! For example, if you were writing about Kumtor, perhaps you would mention the Law on Subsoil as regulating mining activity. And perhaps you would determine that this law lacks in some way. For additional credit, make a recommendation on how to change and improve the law to better meet UNGP standards. [This is just an example ... there are many other things you could consider like the regulatory system, court system, ministry cooperation, systems for government guidance and expectations-setting, etc. etc.]

Your recommendations should be 2 to 4 pages - what's important is the quality of thought, not the length. You can earn up to 10 additional points on your overall course grade (out of 100), meaning you can go from a C to a B, a B to an A for the class overall.

And a side note: if you're worried about your grades right now, keep in mind that (i) everyone has good marks for class attendance and participation, (ii) your midterm is only worth 25% of your grade (the final paper is 50%, so it will be much more important). Everyone is capable of earning a B or above at this point, even without taking the extra credit.

Best,

Meghan
