This course develops students’ academic reading and writing skills through integrated work with the topics, readings, vocabulary, and writing activities in NorthStar Reading and Writing Level 2 (3rd) edition. Students develop foundational reading strategies such as predicting, identifying main ideas and supporting details, making inferences, expressing opinions, and integrating information from two related readings. The course also provides guided practice in understanding vocabulary in context and using information from readings to support their responses.
The writing component guides students through planning, drafting, revising, and editing clear and organized paragraphs and short functional texts for different purposes. Writing tasks include descriptive and opinion paragraphs, a letter to the editor, a web page, a game review, a brochure, a persuasive e-mail, a narrative paragraph, and a prediction paragraph. Students practice developing topic sentences and supporting details, organizing information, using appropriate language structures, and revising and editing their work. Reading and writing activities are closely connected throughout the course so that students can use information and ideas from the readings as a basis for their writing.
