    • thinkingYou're in an online distance learning situation right now. Look around. What are you seeing? What are you experiencing?

      Okay, I have to admit, the following clip from Captain Phillips has little relevance to this course. But I want it to frame our discussion of this topic for several reasons. 

      1. It shows the weakness of the idea that "the captain/teacher" can always be trusted.
      2. It's great acting and filming, and I like great films, so... Yeah, that's enough. :) (The key line, "I am the captain now," wasn't in the original script. Barkhad Ali ad-libbed it. He had never met Tom Hanks, the famous American actor, before this scene. That's confidence!)
      3. It gives and example of how power and suddently flip from one to another. So, for instance, do you say you teach based on evidence from research? Great!             
        But... what if you are The Researcher now?
