This course is aimed at developing students’ academic reading and writing skills through integrated work with a range of texts and writing tasks. Students develop strategies for identifying main ideas and supporting details, making predictions and inferences, understanding information from context, connecting ideas across texts, and interpreting arguments and opinions.
The writing component is designed to develop students’ ability to produce clear, well-organized paragraphs and short essays for different purposes, including opinion, narrative, descriptive, contrast, cause-and-effect, and persuasive writing. Students also practice organizing ideas, developing topic sentences and supporting details, using appropriate transitions, and revising their writing. Reading and writing activities are closely integrated throughout the course so that students use information and ideas from readings as a basis for the writing tasks.
